Cod Rock
Cod Rock is one of those dive sites that all British divers should
dive. It is situated just south of Berry Head (Brixham) and is sheltered
from most winds apart from E, NE and SE. Cod Rock is a small limestone
pinnacle about 20 m high and around it there are reefs which vary from
15 to 20m deep. A short way off to the east (offshore) the depth drops
down to over 30m. There are quite strong tidal northerly-southerly currents
which can propel the diver quite smartly along depending on the state
of the tide. Someway off to the south lies the Torbay sewage outfall of Sharkham
Point. The contents of this outfall give a special essence to Cod Rock.
The sealife is quite prolific and crabs and starfish are particularly
common. There may be other surprises.
Local divers know Cod Rock and treat it accordingly. However,
owing to its convenient position, conditions and depth it makes an
excellent dive training site - eg. Advanced Diver lifts and rescue.
The sometimes strong tides can give a sense of adventure as the diver
can be carried into unexpected areas. It is often dived, but good dive
planning is essential.
Although Cod Rock is sometimes maligned it can give good diving
despite the less than brilliant visibility that is usually experienced.
Here are a couple of underwater photos around Cod Rock.
